After the violent stabbing of a 7-Eleven owner in Yau Ma Tei, Hongkongers are coming together to raise money for the victim’s grieving family in a strong show of city-wide support.

7-Eleven on Wednesday issued an emergency relief fund for Cheng Ka-pui, the owner who was attacked on March 8 and died on Monday. Now, anyone can go to a 7-Eleven in Hong Kong and donate money to the relief fund, which will go to Cheng’s family.

In the first eight hours the fund was launched, more than $1.6 million was raised.

Cheng’s widow released a statement on Thursday expressing her gratitude to Hongkongers for their overwhelming care and support. She reflected on the city’s compassion and said she will plan for Cheng’s funeral.

Cheng was slain when a quarrel broke out at his 7-Eleven on Pitt Street, when a man, concealing a knife, attempted to steal a bag of chips. Cheng was stabbed and died in a hospital intensive-care unit the next week, leaving his wife and newborn son behind.

The police have classified the incident as murder and theft.
