Hong Kong Wakes to New Lion Rock Democracy Banner

Look familiar? A giant yellow banner that reads “I want genuine universal suffrage” was spotted on Beacon Hill early Tuesday morning. It's exactly what police officers were trying to prevent when they camped out on Lion Rock Monday night ahead of Chinese state leader Zhang Dejiang’s arrival in Hong Kong.

Reminiscent of a similar banner hung on Lion Rock during 2014's Occupy protests, the banner was hung up by volunteers from the League of Social Democrats. The LSD said that this banner was their “souvenir” to Zhang, chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, who will be in town for three days. The league added in a Facebook post that the purpose of the banner is to show Zhang just how determined Hongkongers are in their pursuit of democracy, and to tell state leaders to stop pretending to be blind. Firefighters were later sent to remove the banner.
