Behind the label: Benedetta Bruzziches

Layla Read

Who started it? Designer Benedetta Bruzziches was born 28 years ago in the medieval city of Viterbo, Italy, where she now works alongside her brother, Agostino. After graduating from the European Institute of Design, in Rome, she won first prize in the 2007 Riccione Moda Italia accessories contest and became personal assistant to renowned designer Romeo Gigli. She won a scholarship to do a masters in Paris before being appointed art director of Creative Art of Souls, a company specialising in ecological cotton. Then, after Bruzziches collected numerous awards in 2009 and 2010, last year Vogue invited her to take part in Vogue Talents Corner, a project aimed at promoting young international talent via e-commerce.

Famed for her signature quilted Carmen bags and plated bijoux boxes, the designer injects fantasy elements into everything she creates.

Why we love it: accessories are supposed to be fun and Bruzziches' whimsical approach to minaudieres and handbags is a breath of fresh air, given the punk rock studs and hard edges saturating the sector recently. Her textile knowledge allows her to play with materials and composition, giving her items a unique look and feel, and she manages to retain a sense of romance while ensuring everything is bang on trend. We also can't fail to love a designer who doesn't forget her roots, and a childhood spent in the midst of ancient buildings in Viterbo (which happens to be the home of Italy's gold reserves) is reflected in this rich collection.

What we'd pick: everyone loves a beautifully wrapped gift and that idea has been brought to life with the Gold Cabaret (above left; HK$12,990). For a more theatrical take, there's the Carmen Magic Mushrooms with hand clasp (above right; HK$9,900).
