The Goods

1.  Dashing DNA The Belgian duo running things at Dior – Kris van Assche and Raf Simons – are both partial to minimalist design and a restricted colour palette. Van Assche’s autumn-winter collection for Dior Homme stays true to this aesthetic – but adds a futuristic touch inspired by, the designer says, sci-fi film Gattaca. We can imagine Jude Law or Ethan Hawke donning this sharp ensemble of black jacket (HK$19,000), trousers (HK$7,100), white shirt (HK$4,400) and tie (HK$1,500; all left). For a far bolder look, we suggest this nehru-collar jacket with uber futuristic red emblem (HK$22,000) and trousers (HK$6,900; both right). Dior Homme is in The Landmark Central, tel: 2524 8277.

2.  Quilty pleasures There was a time when, if you wanted a quilted jacket, you would look no further than English brands such as Barbour. But now the French are getting in on the act and – zut alors! – they aren’t too bad. We are quite taken with the Aigle Guingamp quilted jacket (left; HK$2,380), which has the added bonus of a breast pocket. For one that’s a tad more effective in keeping out the cold, we recommend the Aigle Diamondpark hooded down jacket (right; HK$5,500). 3.  Top gear The lack of a pilot's licence has never stopped men from lusting after aviation watches and, similarly, the lack of a car - or ability to drive - should never impede the purchase of a solid pair of Italian driving shoes. Car Shoe were the pioneers of the style and counted former American president John F. Kennedy and Gianni Agnelli, the legendary boss of Fiat, which owns Ferrari and Maserati, as fans. The brand's model for success is keeping things simple, and the classic suede loafer (pictured; HK$3,400), which comes in a variety of colours, will improve any man's wardrobe. 4.  Fume and fortune We don't often feature lighters, but every so often we come across something that causes our eyebrow to arch with interest. We are loving the new ST Dupont Orient Express premium collection, which features the marvellous Ligne 2 lighter (right; HK$15,200).
