1. Striking cords Mark our words, Richard James is set to become the next Paul Smith. OK, James’ eponymous label has a long way to go, actually a really long way to go, but it is growing fast and gaining new fans with each season – plus he’s super-popular in Japan, just like Paul Smith. From his well-tailored winter collection we love the on-trend cotton corduroy navy bomber jacket (right; HK$6,887), because cords really are coming back and just to prove how invested we are in that idea we also recommend the red cord gilet (left; HK$6,071). 2. Ay caramba! OK, we’re not too fond of the whole cool-because-it’s-ironic thing and, really, the next person who says their oh-so-hilarious sartorial must-wear for Christmas is a terrible patterned jumper is going to get a kick in the swingers. However, we’ve never been consistent on these things, so when we saw Converse’s latest Simpsons-themed trainers, well, the child inside of us smiled, for once. 3. Fade into significance British tailoring with a defiantly continental twist is what Neil Barrett is all about. The transplanted Englishman, who calls Milan, Italy, home, is usually, and quite rightly, lauded for his patterned tops, prints and beautifully constructed jackets but this season we were quite taken by the dégradé wool-blend trousers that either graduate from black to grey (right; HK$5,458) or grey to black (left; HK$5,866). 4. Beyond the veil Having Kanye West as a close friend seems to be working out great for Givenchy’s creative head, Riccardo Tisci, whose more outlandish design tics have become mainstream and less outré. Still, the Italian likes to surprise and, with his winter collection, he’s pushing things further. We’re not sure even Kanye can pull off the male face veil but every other sports luxe piece in these looks has more than a whiff of hip hop influence. The first look features a velvet sweatshirt (left; HK$15,000) with a postmodernist print while the second one involves a grey printed felpa sweatshirt (right; HK$9,490) with a sports-pitch-type print. Both ensembles are matched with the same baggy flannel trousers (HK$16,800) and completed with the expensive but wonderful Givenchy Tyson basketball trainer (HK$8,290).
