“He likes his coffee black like his soul, he drinks his scorching pot like fokking psycho.” Sung in a childish falsetto before a squelchy beat and a torrent of ridiculous rapped expletives kick in, We Have Candy is the playful opening to the fourth album from freaky, inimitable South African rap-rave crew Die Antwoord. On the album, produced by Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs, the satirical white-trash duo of Ninja and Yolandi Visser continue their obsession with sex, and their man and lady fun bits. While they undoubtedly possess a unique style and sound, they’ve been telling the same joke for quite some time now. Ignoring the silly throwaway sketches (Wings on My Penis, U Like Boobies?), a growling Jack Black turns Rats Rule into a wonderfully demonic theatrical number while on the stomping S*** Just Got Real, featuring Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog, the emcees rhyme about humorous “gangster s***”. It’s often difficult to tell where the line between real life and self-aware in-joke is actually drawn, but that’s the genius of Die Antwoord, who will no doubt be one of the biggest draws at this year’s Clockenflap.
