Hong Kong doesn’t allow the import of pit bull terriers, a breed categorised here (and elsewhere) as a “fighting dog”. Those who wonder about the wisdom of the rule should read Bronwen Dickey’s well researched book, subtitled “The Battle over an American Icon”, which shows how in the US the dog has gone from being a beloved national symbol to one vilified as hardwired to kill. That image, she writes, owes much to a “guard-dog fad” in the 1970s, which turned these companions into weapons, particularly in low-income urban communities. Dickey cites class prejudice, sensationalist reporting, misidentification and alternative facts that have worked against the dog. The pro camp will appreciate her research; those against will probably bare their teeth.
