Men’s winter fashion essentials from Lanvin Homme, Scotch & Soda

Abid Rahman casts his eye over some menswear gems

Quilt trip The most irritating thing about cold weather in Hong Kong is that it doesn’t last long enough to justify the expense of a decent winter wardrobe. To wit, The goods suggests picking up a quilted down jacket or two that are warm enough to cover your winter needs and light and airy enough to wear into the spring. Scotch & Soda has a great range of quilted jackets, from the hooded and camouflaged variety (above left; HK$1,850) to the plain and classic collarless bomber (above right; HK$1,890). Scotch & Soda is in IFC Mall, Central.

Homme run If you follow fashion, you’ll know there’s a bit of a palaver going on at Lanvin with long-time artistic director Alber Elbaz’s rather abrupt exit in October. Fret not, though, Lucas Ossendrijver will still be designing at Lanvin Homme, so the men can rest easy. Ossendrijver’s winter collection is all foppish and bohemian, and we love this retro 1970s cop look of leather trench (HK$71,000), loose trousers (HK$7,800), jumper (HK$7,600), shirt (HK$6,500), necklace (HK$2,800) and slip-on trainers (HK$8,100; all above right). This look is a bit more wintery, with its large, loose parka with shearling-lined hood (HK$34,600), grey Prince of Wales check trousers (HK$14,000), loose-fit top (HK$7,300), leather boots (HK$12,600), leather gloves (HK$5,500) and bag (HK$16,600; all above left). Lanvin is at 10 Ice House Street, Central.

From me to me OK, let’s not sugar-coat this; you’ve returned a tonne of unwanted Christmas gifts and now you’re looking for something you actually want. Well, if that’s the case, we recommend you pool your resources and check out the new Sunset accessory line from Dior Homme that should be in Hong Kong any day now. Made of wonderful grained calf leather, our picks are the duffel bag (above right; HK$15,500) and the three-colour backpack (above left; HK$29,000). Dior Homme is in The Landmark, Central.

Retail therapy If you think about it, most of us start the new year in the most terrible way possible. We’re either too drunk, too sick, too tired or, let’s not forget, too emotional – and the truly committed are a combination of all of those things. We may have made this up entirely, but we’ve read somewhere that retail therapy is a pretty effective hangover cure, so we recommend getting a pair of snazzy shoes, such as these from Paul Smith (two-tone brown leather shoes, HK$4,200, above left; black leather lace-ups, HK$4,900, above right); it numbs the pain, honest. Paul Smith is in The Landmark.
