Fashion tips: Where to find Cate Blanchett's "yeti" skirt; cures for static, frizzy hair

I loved the yeti skirts worn to the Baftas this year. Why don't my searches for them come up with anything similar? At the shops, the answer was just "no".

Alexander McQueen is not going to make a unique gown for you as it did for Ms Blanchett's red-carpet appearance at the 69th British Academy Film Awards. The gown looks like an amalgam of a cut-out floral top and feather skirt from McQueen's spring-summer 2016 collection, but neither is available in local boutiques. Sorry. "Yeti", by the way, was coined as a derisive description of voluminous, feathered skirts. Alice + Olivia has a few options for real people, such as the black Kiara dress with a sleeveless top and ostrich feather miniskirt (HK$10,490). Elizabeth and James offers a drop-waist cocktail dress with an ostrich feather skirt and a black knit racerback top (HK$4,800; Lane Crawford). The label also illustrates how you can get the look with fringe instead of feathers on a navy dress (HK$7,491). Just think of all the ostriches you'd save. If you're still harbouring delusions of grandeur, then get yourself a second-hand gown, such as the Naeem Khan gold sequinned and ostrich feather gown at TheRealReal.com (HK$20,964; only in size S).

I'm OK with having a bad hair day now and then, but recently it's been never-ending. How do you battle static hair, especially in the drier climates I have to visit for work?

The Dictator: Me? My perfect hair doesn't have that problem. For fine-haired women like you, there are multiple tricks to adopt at home and on the road. First, a great, cheap home remedy: the dryer sheets you use for your laundry. Good old Bounce will do (HK$99.90 for 120 sheets; ParknShop). But you probably want a fancier solution. For that, the keyword is not "static", duh, but "anti-frizz" and "smoothing". Phyto's Huile Supreme Rich Smoothing Oil treats dry, thick hair with botanical ingredients (HK$300; Watsons). Living Proof, the brand endorsed by Jennifer Aniston, makes the Weightless Styling Spray (HK$255; Harvey Nichols), with a new oil-free and silicone-free formula. An ionic hair dryer will also make a difference, such as the Philips Shine and Protect (HK$328), or the Panasonic Double Ionity Quick Dry Hair Dryer (HK$318; both available at Fortress). Next, have a look at the comb or brushes you're using. Many of them work to make your hair frizzy rather than smooth. GHD has a range of combs and brushes specifically designed to detangle without creating static (HK$120 to HK$330). If all else fails, tie it up and slick it down! Oh, don't think a hat will solve your problems. Synthetic materials will only exacerbate the situation.
