Can double denim ever be stylish? Kendall Jenner and Ralph Lauren show how it’s done

Ralph Lauren has the swagger, style and Colorado ranch to pull off the head-to-toe jeans look – unlike a certain Britney and Justin

Ralph Lauren has been sporting his signature denim-on-denim look for decades. He also has the ultimate accessory to justify such dedication to the cause, his very own ranch in Colorado.

Is the Texan tuxedo ripe for a revival? When then-couple Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears showed up to the 2001 American Music Awards in matching head-to-toe denim, they were ridiculed by the fashion police for their faux pas. Almost two decades later, the outfits still look more suitable for a rodeo than a red carpet.

This doesn’t mean, however, that denim on denim is a definite no no. Last month, Kendall Jenner was spotted in Los Angeles clad in denim separates from American Eagle Outfitters, which she accessorised with a denim Chanel bag and … wait for it … a denim scrunchie. She is clearly a believer in do it all or don’t do it at all.

American designer Ralph Lauren, another denim aficionado, sported the look hours before his 50th anniversary show in Central Park during New York Fashion Week. Only a true Western fiend like Ralph Lauren, who actually owns a ranch in Colorado, can pull off denim on denim and accessorise it with a cowboy belt sporting a huge buckle.

The designer is so fond of a good pair of jeans that even for black-tie affairs he doesn’t shy away from pairing a tuxedo jacket with a pair of distressed denims, as he did later that day to celebrate the milestone.
