YSL resumes couture business

Former top model Carla Bruni presents a creation for French designer Yves Saint Laurent at his last Couture show in 2002

Yves Saint Laurent is returning to couture for the first time with a brand new atelier after the fashion house showcased its last bespoke collection more than 10 years ago in 2002.

Creative director Hedi Slimane oversees the whole tailor-made production at the 17th-century mansion Hôtel de Sénecterre in Paris. Divided into three compartments – the tailoring, dressmaking and dressing room – the interiors are adorned with furniture and art handpicked by Slimane from his private collection.

The brand is coming back with its originally abandoned “Yves” for the couture business. Slimane will select which look to complement with a numbered, hand-sewn “Yves Saint Laurent” label made of ivory silk satin.

The creative director also shot a black-and-white ad campaign called “Rue de L’Université” to feature the new haute couture pieces with the brand’s new mansion as the background, instead of showcasing the collection on the couture schedule.
