STYLE Edit: Daniel Lee makes spot on Bottega Veneta debut with luscious ‘stealth wealth’ bags

The Maxi Cabat and the Pouch are Lee’s delightful first offerings since succeeding Thomas Maier as creative director

Bottega Veneta's Cocco Souple Pouch in Mist White

Bottega Veneta creative director Daniel Lee offered up two creations in his spring/summer 2019 collection: the Maxi Cabat and the Pouch mark Lee’s first designs for the brand following Tomas Maier's departure.

The conundrum for all new creative directors is to find a balance between the brand’s established identity, the previous director’s creative legacy, the zeitgeist and their own vision for the fashion house. Whether they’ve answered correctly is, of course, up to the consumer.

Lee’s take on the clutch, the Pouch, offers luscious leather folds and an exaggerated frame that brings assurance to one’s summer wardrobe.

The Bottega Veneta “stealth-wealth” look, as coined by a Vogue reporter back in 2006, can be seen in the Pouch with the Bottega Veneta logo discreetly embossed inside. Perhaps this downplayed demeanour is more in fashion than ever.

Those in the know will recognise the Bottega Veneta intrecciato weave in one variation of the Pouch’s exterior design. The distinctive leather weave has been part of the Italian brand since its origins as a leather atelier in the 1960s.

The Velvet Calf Intrecciato Pouch is offered in a high-saturation Grass Green, Nero Black and Lava Red. There is also an online exclusive Mist White.

The bag has a voluminous, rounded shape and just one compartment lined in Nappa. With a depth of 7.4 inches and a width of 15.3 inches, it is bigger than your average evening clutch. Take this bag out for the day and it can comfortably stash your evening essentials, too.

Where size doesn’t matter, the Pouch 20 is considered the baby sister, or relatively “mini” clutch, for the small essentials.

Both sizes come with three artisanal variations. The first, mentioned earlier, is the Velvet Calf Intrecciato Pouch with the signature weave.

Outfits of the week pt. 2

Style icon and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has been on Instagram snapping her Pouch collection, which is in the second variation: Butter Calf. Her outfits of the day have recently consisted of the Butter Calf Pouch, with panels of smooth calf leather, in Mist White or Mustard.

The Butter Calf Pouch also comes in Cammello Tan, Bordeaux, Nero and the funkier Sky Blue. Indeed, all variations are offered in natural tones and saturated, pop-like hues. This diverse colour palette featured on the Maxi Cabat, too, with neon pigments interwoven with muted shades.

A third variation of the Pouch is the Cocco Souple, which uses four skins worked to form the continuous exterior of scales. The finished product is contemporary, understated chic – especially in Mist White.
