Take a look inside President Trump’s US$200 million, presidential-themed hotel in Washington, DC
Attorney General William Barr is planning a US$30,000 holiday party at Trump’s flagship property in the US capital
The timing was impeccable – just two weeks before being elected president, Donald Trump announced his arrival in the US capital with the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Trump International Hotel Washington, DC.
Declared open for business on October 26, 2016, the presidential-themed property sits proudly at Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street – just a 15-minute walk from The White House South Lawn. On November 8, 2016, Trump would be elected the country’s leader.
Months before formally taking office, Trump planted his flag inside the Old Post Office Pavilion, which dates back to 1899 and required some US$200 million in renovations.
Along with being known for its high price tags – one night in the presidential suite costs US$15,000 – the hotel has also become a meeting ground for conservative groups and Trump associates.
Most lately, in August The Washington Post reported that Attorney General William Barr booked the hotel for a private holiday party in December that is likely to cost more than US$30,000.
The hotel is located near the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street, just a 15-minute walk from The White House South Lawn.
Crystal chandeliers hang in the lobby. The hotel’s ballroom – the largest in Washington, DC – was named the “Presidential Ballroom.”
An old mail chute remains, a nod to the building’s past as a busy post office.
Rooms start at US$297 a night for a deluxe room and go up to US$15,000 a night for the presidential suite, including unrestricted access to all amenities. Booking the Trump town house with amenities can set guests back US$25,000 a night. There's also the very first Ivanka Suite, which costs the comparatively modest US$1,047 a night.
Those amenities include the 10,000-square-foot spa and fitness centre designed by Ivanka Trump.
And as for the decor, you cannot go far without seeing a Trump-branded product.
Conference rooms are named after former presidents – and, in line with his style, after Trump himself.
Dining options include David Burke’s steakhouse BLT Prime and the Benjamin Bar & Lounge.
BLT Prime has tables in the mezzanine, with views of the clock tower, but there's also more intimate seating available in the lower level.
The decor was chosen by Ivanka Trump, partnering with the design firm HBA.
On offer in the atrium’s Benjamin Bar and Lounge is ounce-sized (30ml) samplings of rare wines served on a silver spoon.
The cocktail menu also includes several pricey drinks, while the most expensive bottle of champagne will set you back US$2,650.
The Trump International Hotel Washington, DC was first opened to guests in September of 2016. However, the grand opening was held a month later, in October, by which time the election countdown was reaching its final stages. President Trump and his family are pictured below at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Over the years, the hotel has been visited by many of President Trump’s associates.
In August of 2019, The Washington Post reported that Attorney General William Barr booked the hotel for a private holiday party in December that is likely to cost upwards of US$30,000.
The party will reportedly feature a buffet and a four-hour open bar. Despite the high price tag, just 200 people are expected to attend.
