Hallyu fans are a couple of days away from witnessing actor Lee Min-ho’s much-awaited return to K-drama, with the release of The King: Eternal Monarch. The Boys Over Flowers and Heirs leading man was discharged from the mandated military enlistment on April 25, 2019, and has been hard at work filming this new drama since September. Lee takes on the titular role of Emperor Lee Gon, who protects his realm from a portal that connects two parallel worlds. The drama is slated to air on April 17, 2020.

Starring alongside Lee is another familiar face, Kim Go-eun of Goblin fame. She plays detective Jung Tae-eul, who hails from a modern reality similar to ours and who must work with Lee Gon to close the door connecting their worlds. The two stars develop a difficult romantic connection that interrupts their realities. Meanwhile, Goo Seo Ryung (Jung Eun-chae), a young prime minister in Lee Gon’s world, develops feelings for him. Since there are two universes, some actors, including Go-eun, must portray two different characters.

For this project, Lee Min-ho is reuniting with at least two people he’s worked with in the past. The first is Heirs screenwriter Kim Eun-sook and the other is veteran actress Kim Young-ok, who portrayed Gu Jun-pyo’s head housekeeper in Boys Over Flowers.

“After a long break, I am returning with The King: Eternal Monarch. You have waited a long time so I will come to you soon and make a good impression. It’s even more meaningful to be able to work with [Kum Eun-sook] again as a more mature [actor] and I will work hard to make this a good project, especially since it’s our second one,” Lee said, according to Soompi.
