Five years ago, when beloved K-pop group Seventeen first took the limelight, few could have predicted the impact the 13-piece boy band would have on the world of K-pop and beyond.

Away from the stage the group is known among fans for the wit and humour of its members, as displayed on various variety shows and music shows.

As the group celebrates its fifth year in the industry – first launched with a live showcase on South Korea’s MBC network, on April 26, 2015 – with the release of new documentary Seventeen: Hit The Road, STYLE looks back at five of its funniest and most touching moments.

That mafia meme

The group’s first-ever mafia game will always be a recurring meme among fans – with Jun playing a mob boss, while his bandmates beg for their lives. Seventeen and its fans loved the game so much that members played it in several other episodes of the band’s Going Seventeen reality show.

Love and brotherhood

Long before they were famous, Seventeen trained for a long time together, creating a stronger bond invaluable to the road ahead. On numerous occasions, the members have cooked meals for each other, calling ahead to find out which food they like, and comforting one another during darker times.

Seventeen and ASMR

Some of the funniest video moments have come when members engaged in ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response). They did ASMR for the “Insomnia-Zero” episode of Going Seventeen, which had the members laughing as they listened to each other with earphones on.

The boys in One Fine Day in Japan

Fans loved it when the band appeared on MBC Music’s travel variety show One Fine Day. Its trip to Akita, Japan, led to moments such as when Mingyu, Jeonghan, Hoshi and Wonwoo were paired up and instructed to followmembers’ orders using headphones, or when the rotational “king” title was bestowed among the members of the two groups: hyung (older members) and dongsaeng (younger members).

The 1 + 1 idea

When Going Seventeen 2019 started, the group’s members had to come up with individual ideas to keep the show fresh. While others came up with personal video blogs and flashy presentations, Jun presented his “1 + 1” idea, where the group would visit his hometown and try out its delicacies. The resulting show was a hit with fans.
