SM Entertainment’s biggest group to date, Red Velvet, is at the peak of its career – with countless advertisements, award show performances and chart-topping, record-breaking comebacks. Recently, the South Korean outfit debuted their first-ever subunit, Irene & Seulgi, whose concept and song Monster quickly went viral worldwide.

Celebrating their sixth year in the K-pop industry, here’s a look back at the beloved girl group’s achievements since their debut in August 2014.

‘The ReVe Festival: Finale’ 24-hour achievement

Released in December 2019, Red Velvet’s first compilation album “The ReVe Festival: Finale” became the band’s most successful LP to date, alongside the track Psycho.

Some of their accolades include being the only idol girl group to have a Melon “roof hit”, being the first girl group in history to have three No 1 albums on US iTunes, and ranking No 2 on Billboard’s Social 50 Chart – the highest ranking for a girl group.

4 times on Billboard’s World Albums chart

The band’s most successful period begin in 2017 when no less that four albums charted on Billboard’s World Albums Chart. Fourth EP “Rookie”, first summer EP “The Red Summer” and second full album “Perfect Velvet” all ranked No 1 almost immediately after release, while the reissued “The Perfect Red Velvet” charted at No 3 in 2018.

A rare performance in North Korea

At a rare 2018 Pyongyang concert, Red Velvet was chosen among the 160 South Korean artists to perform in front of the country’s leadership, including supreme leader Kim Jong-un – making them only the seventh idol group to perform in the country and the first since 2003.

The girl group performed their hit songs, Red Flavor and Bad Boy and North Koreans’ reaction to Red Velvet became a hot topic within South Korean media. Kim Jong-un was deeply interested in the girl group and made sure to clear his schedule to attend their performance.
