The roots of the British royal family’s tree have been branching out since Harry and Meghan relocated to Los Angeles, but it goes beyond that. Back in 1995, Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, relocated his family to Cape Town where he raised his family away from the media spotlight.
Recently, his daughter, 28-year-old Lady Amelia Spencer popped up on social media to announce her engagement to South African Greg Mallett. So who exactly is Amelia?
Lady Amelia is the daughter of Charles Spencer, niece of Princess Diana and a first cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry. As well as older sister Lady Kitty, she has a twin sister Lady Eliza, and a younger brother, Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp.

She got engaged in Cape Town, where she still lives
Amelia announced her July engagement by sharing a photo of herself and her real estate fiancé sharing a kiss on her private Instagram account.
“I can‘t wait to marry you,” she captioned the snap.
Greg also shared photos of them at Clouds Wine & Guest Estate in Cape Town’s Stellenbosch.
He captioned the images: “So this was the best day of my life; 22nd of July 2020, I asked the love of my life to spend the rest of her life with me and she said YES. Couldn't be happier and I love you with all my heart @ameliaspencer15.”
They met at university
The 30-year-old Greg Mallett works as an estate agent and first met Spencer while they were both studying at the University of Cape Town. They have been together ever since.
Mallett is linked to South African rugby royalty, being the nephew of the former South African national rugby coach, Nick Mallett.
She skipped Harry and Meghan’s wedding
The three Spencer sisters attended Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding at Westminster Abbey in 2011. And while Lady Kitty, Louis and Lady Eliza showed up at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day in 2018, Amelia was noticeably missing.
Her first name is actually Katya
Lady Amelia was born on July 10, 1992 as Katya Amelia Spencer, but ditched her first name from an early age. Along with her siblings, she grew up in the suburban Constantia area of Cape Town in South Africa.
The Spencer clan is expanding
The Spencer family continues to grow, with Amelia’s sister, Kitty Spencer, set to marry her millionaire boyfriend Michael Lewis next year, too.
There is no official word on exactly when or where Spencer and Mallett will get married, but it’s very likely that that Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be invited. The princes are known to be quite close to their cousins, who have attended many special occasions and key family moments in the past.
