Music legends are remembered for different reasons. Some for reaching new artistic heights, some for breaking stereotypes and boundaries, and others simply for the enduring quality of the songs they left us with. Danny Chan Pak-keung is one such legend. Emerging in the 70s and gaining fame in the 80s, Chan was one of Canto-pop’s first idols. His romantic ballads, when combined with his unmistakable voice, made fans all over Asia swoon.

Chan’s chiselled good looks led him to star alongside the likes of Leslie Cheung and Chow Yun-fat, and most notably he played Cherie Chung’s boyfriend in An Autumn’s Tale. However, his real talents were not only as a vocalist – he penned many of his most famous songs too.

Chan was a legend taken away from Hong Kong’s music industry too soon. Here’s STYLE’s selection of his most iconic work as we remember Danny Chan on what would be his 62nd birthday on September 7.

Remembrance of a Parent’s Love

This number was dedicated to Chan’s parents and he sings of appreciation for their love.

Tears Dropping for You

This was Chan’s breakout song from his debut “First Love” album.

Ripples

One of the first songs composed by Chan himself to hit the charts. This tune really showcases his talents as a vocalist and was performed beautifully.

Just Loving You

Another original score written by the man himself, Just Loving You is one of the most loved songs of the 80s.

Wait

Wait was one of the most popular songs by Chan and has been covered numerous times by the likes of Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan and Janice Vidal.

Trailer of Love

Another ballad performed so well by Chan that it brought attention to the song writer herself Sandy Lamb – the sister of famous DJ and celebrity personality Jan Lamb. Lamb would go on to release the song again under her own name and gained notable fame before she hung up her mic and became a talent agent in the 90s.

Life Expectations

Arguably one of the most popular of songs by Chan and one of his last chart toppers before he fell into a coma in 1992. He died 17 months later in October 1993 at the age of 35.

The song was the theme song of TVB’s 1989 big budget production, Looking Back in Anger, which spread the tune’s popularity even further around the region. In 1989, Life Expectations won a ranking in both RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards and Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards Presentation, where it also won the prize for best lyrics.
