Among European royals, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is popular indeed – she and husband Prince Daniel’s wedding was even compared to Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s

The eldest daughter of the Swedish king and queen made waves when she married former personal trainer Daniel Westling in 2010 and visited LGBT non-profit RFSL earlier this year

Blessed with a royal fortune, enviable status and a grand residence at Stockholm’s Haga Palace, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden holds the title of heir apparent to the Swedish throne. In addition to this prestige, the Swedish princess bears yet another equally impressive – though unofficial – title. In 2017, she was rated as the most-popular member of the Swedish royal family according local magazine Svensk Damtidning. She could easily be considered one of the most popular royals in all of Europe’s monarchies.

A look at her distinguished life, from her unwavering dedication to her royal role to her ever-present affability, clearly shows why her approval ratings are so high.

She’s the “princess next door”

Perhaps the most prominent reason why Princess Victoria is so well respected and admired is her genuine down-to-earth and amicable personality. The princess has also been open about her health struggles, which include dyslexia and even a public battle with anorexia in the 90s.

Her outspokenness when it comes to her personal life – particularly her publicly addressing her past eating disorder – has helped carve her image in the public sphere as overwhelmingly relatable.

She didn’t marry another royal

When the Swedish princess married Daniel Westling with much fanfare in 2010, the wedding was likened to that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. In terms of nature and stature, it was hailed as the biggest royal wedding since that famous celebration of the 1980s.

However, what was possibly most striking about the royal affair wasn’t its magnitude, but the fact that the groom wasn’t a member of the European aristocracy. Rather, he was the princess’s former personal trainer. The two dated for eight years before tying the knot. Though initially the nontraditional coupling garnered a certain disdain from Europe’s upper classes and the press, Princess Victoria vehemently defended her right to love her future prince. Nowadays Prince Daniel is a well-regarded member of the Swedish royal family.

She’s a polyglot

Educated in Sweden, France and the USA, the future Swedish queen speaks four languages: Swedish, English, French and German. Furthermore, throughout her career, the princess has extensively travelled the world representing her homeland and promoting Sweden to the global community.

She’s involved with social causes

The royal is also the vocal champion for a range of meaningful causes. She founded Kronprinsessan Victorias Fond, a charitable fund that helps disabled Swedish youth.

Moreover, in a landmark moment earlier this year, the princess visited the non-profit RFSL (The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights), one of the world’s oldest LGBTQ+ organisations. This was the first time the crown princess had visited such an organisation, sending a strong message of support for the LGBTQ+ community.
