One-minute bio: Guo Pei
The Chinese designer wins international acclaim in 2015 with a jaw-dropping yellow gown worn by Rihanna
Born in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution, Guo Pei’s designs double as magnificent architectural pieces, which boast traditional Chinese aesthetics and exquisite craftsmanship.
A graduate of Beijing School of Industrial Fashion Design, the Chinese designer established her atelier Rose Studio in 1997. Leading around 500 skilled embroidery artisans, the home-grown talent has been producing gorgeous bespoke costumes for China’s social and political elite for more than 20 years. In 2008, 300 of her creations were worn by performers at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics.
Embodying the finest expertise in sewing and needlework, some of her complex designs require thousands of hours and up to two years to craft.
By mixing Chinese flair with Western style and continuously incorporating contemporary innovations into her emotion-evoking garments, Guo is the ambassador for the nation’s high-end fashion. She has changed the world’s perspective on “Made in China” style.
