This year’s Met Gala 2019 in New York – the annual, invitation-only fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute – continued to making global headlines with its heavyweight stars and mind-boggling fashions – think rapper Cardi B and her three-metre- (10-foot-) long train and Billy Porter’s Cleopatra-inspired ensemble with three-metre-wide wings.

While not as many Chinese celebrities were spotted at Monday’s event as at the Met Gala in 2015 – which hosted the “China: Through The Looking Glass” exhibition – there were still a number of Chinese celebrities hitting the pink carpet in front of the museum.

Check out who they were and what they wore to suit the theme of this year’s event, “Camp: Notes on Fashion”.

Liu Wen

Monday was the 10th year that Chinese supermodel Liu Wen has walked along the pink carpet at the Met Gala.

This year she opted for an asymmetrical yellow-and-black checked suit adorned with tassels by designer Thom Browne.

It’s not very often we see Liu dressed in an androgynous style, but she made a cool boyish impression.

Chris Lee

As the ambassador for Gucci timepieces and jewellery in Asia, Chinese singer Chris Lee was dressed in a bespoke red duchesse and black velvet long-sleeved dress by the brand’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, topped with a black headpiece with veil.

The multicoloured jacquard embroidery and peacock detailing hinted at a traditional Chinese-style outfit, and was completed with Le Marché des Merveilles Lion head earrings and Gucci’s signature tiger head rings.

Lay Zhang

Lay Zhang, a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band, EXO, made his Met Gala debut in a custom double-breasted black nylon suit, specially crafted by Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Earlier this year, Zhang was officially announced as the brand’s menswear ambassador for the Greater China region.

He appeared on the pink carpet with the Valentino gang, which included celebrities Naomi Campbell, Juliane Moore, Adut Akech and Piccioli.

Wendi Deng Murdoch

Wendi Deng Murdoch, the businesswoman and former third wife of the Australian-born American media tycoon, Rupert Murdoch, attended the extravaganza in a feathered gown by London-based designer Mary Katrantzou.

Before her pink carpet appearance, Deng hosted her annual star-studded soirée in her luxurious New York flat, which featured guests including the Met’s curator Andrew Bolton and designers Zac Posen, Jeremy Scott, Thom Browne and Donatella Versace.

Wendy Yu

Wendy Yu, CEO and founder of Yu Holdings, made a fairy-like appearance.

She was dressed in a custom-made Giambattista Valli dress, Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie and a clutch bag by Edie Parker.

As one of China’s new wave of fashion investors, Yu’s portfolio comprises the brand of Mary Katrantzou, who dressed Wendi Murdoch, upmarket clothing brand Cefinn, founded by Samantha Cameron, taxi-hailing app Didi and Tujia – “China’s Airbnb”.
