STYLE Edit: How Qeelin’s auspicious Wulu Bamboo Lace necklace can bring good fortune and positive energy

Limited-edition design features pendant interpreted as bamboo in 18-carat rose gold, interlaced with stems and leaves in gold, emeralds and diamonds

Chinese actress Sandra Ma, who is a brand ambassador for Qeelin, wears the fine jewellery brand’s Wulu Bamboo Lace 18-carat rose gold, diamond and emerald necklace.

Qeelin’s Wulu fine jewellery collection is popular for a reason – the gourd motif has curves reminiscent of the figure 8, which has auspicious connotations in Chinese culture and, when placed in a Western context, resembles the infinity symbol.

Now, the brand has launched an addition to its Wulu line.

The Wulu Bamboo Lace necklace is a limited-edition piece, which marries 18-carat rose gold with diamonds and emeralds. In this iteration the Wulu pendant is interpreted as bamboo in rose gold, interlaced with stems and leaves in gold, emeralds and diamonds.

The bamboo concept is not only elegantly delicate, but also holds significance in Chinese culture, says Qeelin’s creative director Dennis Chan.

“Bamboo holds a special place in the hearts of the Chinese,” he says. “It signifies moral integrity, resilience and loyalty.

“Its form is pure elegance and strength. Marry that with what the Wulu represents – good fortune and positive energy – and you have a piece of fine jewellery that is rich in meaning and cultural history.”

The pendant is suspended from a 32-inch (81cm) rose gold chain interspersed with six emerald beads. On a functional note, the clasp is adjustable.

Items from Wulu collections have been sought after since Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung wore a single Wulu earring at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. It drew international attention to the debut of the fine jewellery company with its roots firmly embedded in Chinese tradition.

Carrying the banner now as brand ambassador is Sandra Ma, the Chinese actress lauded for her television and film roles. She wears the Wulu Bamboo Lace necklace to perfection and her status on the Chinese cultural scene complements this fine piece, which Dennis Chan says is one of his personal favourites.

Chan describes it as “a stunning example of the elegance of oriental beauty.

“It combines traditional Chinese values and ancient folklore with intricate craftsmanship and precious gems.”

Qeelin’s name is derived from a mythical Chinese animal called the qilin, which is associated with romance. Its creations, sometimes playful and engaging, are inspired by all things Chinese, yet executed to a level of excellence that transcends cultural associations.

That it stands among the most desirable luxury brands is evident in its acquisition by Kering, the Paris-based international luxury group.
