This year, blue gave way to green as one of the most popular colours seen on dials. Watchmakers seem to agree that the 2019 is the year of green dials and straps. Different shades of the colour found its way to everything from jewellery watches to the more muted utilitarian interpretations such as IWC’s Pilot range.

However, blue could be making a comeback in 2020; Pantone has just named Classic Blue as the colour to kick start the new decade.

Here, we take a look at a selection of new blue timepieces that are getting a head start on embracing the blue.

Van Cleef & Arpels

The whimsical Pont de Amoureux from Van Cleef & Arpels gets a new sparkling high jewellery update this year. This version features that unmistakable dial with a diamond and sapphire bracelet.

Richard Mille

Blue frames the movement of the RM 11-04 Roberto Mancini Automatic Flyback Chronograph pays homage to its namesake, the manager of Italy’s national football team, the Azzurri. The official team colour also finds its way to the rubber strap. The automatic movement has a 55-hour power reserve.

Hublot

Another timepiece that takes inspiration from the colours of football team is Hublot’s Classic Fusion Chronograph Chelsea FC. The brand’s signature model is gets an all-blue transformation; the football club’s emblem found at the 12 o’clock position.

MB&F

The Legacy Machine Thunderdome has a light blue guilloche dial that’s housed under – you guessed it – a dome-shaped sapphire crystal. Its three axes revolving at different speeds on different planes, dubbed TriAx, is a brand new innovation from the independent watchmaker. The platinum design is limited to 33 pieces.

Omega

Celebrating one of the biggest international events in 2020 is Omega’s Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition. The official timekeeper of the Olympic Games, Omega has chosen to introduce a ceramic dial to the Seamaster Aqua Terra for the first time here. The blue polished dial is laser-engraved with a geometric pattern that’s actually the Tokyo Game’s emblem. The watch is released in a limited edition of 2020 pieces.
