TVXQ, Big Bang, EXO and BTS. Who is the next commander of the K-pop scene?

Myriad boy and girl bands are jockeying for position, using their distinctive charm and talent. Seventeen is one of the strong contenders.

The 13-member band of Pledis Entertainment has conquered several charts at home and abroad with its latest mini album, “You Make My Day”, and lead track Oh My!

The band wowed people when it debuted at No.3 on Billboard’s World Albums chart and was ranked No.7 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The positioning on the latter was remarkable as few K-pop singers have achieved the feat.

The group also topped the Gaon Weekly and Monthly Album Chart this month, selling more than 350,000 albums. K-pop girl group Twice was ranked second.

Seventeen, which debuted in 2015, is dubbed “self-produced idols”, since its members take part in songwriting and choreography for the group’s tracks.

Group members are also expanding their activities to acting and show hosting. Mingyu appeared in a Thai sitcom in 2017 and is an MC of SBS music programme Inkigayo.
