It’s no secret that the Mandarin Oriental is one of Hong Kong’s most luxurious hotels. But the fact that it’s also home to one of the city’s most expensive – if not the most expensive – cocktail is a lesser-known detail.

Last August, the hotel’s M Bar updated its cocktail menu with a new theme: Journey to the West. Populating the menu are cocktails infused with ingredients from around Asia, including the fancifully named Oriental Star (made with 20-year-old Gu Yue Long Shan Hua Diao) and By the Javanese (made with Batavia-Arrack, a type of rum from Java, and Javanese taramind liqueur).

The menu lists 15 cocktails with prices that range from HK$165 to a staggering HK$1,688 per glass – and that’s without the 10 per cent service charged slapped on top of it.

We swung by the bar to taste-test the most extravagant item on the menu, the Bespoke Champagne Cocktail, made with gold flakes, Remy Martin Louis XIII and Krug Grande Cuvee.

Put these three very expensive ingredients together and you’re bound to end up with a hefty price tag – but how does it taste? Check out our video below to find out.
