Why ‘Black Panther’ could be a dark horse for the best picture Oscar at the 2019 Academy Awards
The box-office smash, featuring a largely all-African-American cast, is the first superhero film to be nominated for such an award at next month’s ceremony

This year’s Oscar nominations are out and the predictions are pouring in.
Among the most notable releases of the past year, Marvel Studio’s superhero film Black Panther stands out with seven nominations for best picture, original score, original song, production design, sound mixing, costume design and sound editing.
Black Panther, starring Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B. Jordan, which was released last February, holds the record for being the first superhero film with a largely all-African-American cast.
While there is no doubt that the music, sound and costumes were amazing in the film, let’s take a look at the reasons why Black Panther might be the one out of the eight nominated films to win the Oscar for best picture next month, which is (arguably) the most important award of the night.
‘Black Panther’ brought in big bucks
The film cost around US$200 million to make, but has earned more than US$1.3 billion at the box office worldwide. It is now ranked ninth out of the all-time top-grossing films worldwide.
The first best-picture nomination ...
Black Panther was perhaps last year’s biggest Hollywood success story, with it being written, directed and largely created and performed by black filmmakers and actors.
The film has continued to create history by being the first ever superhero film to be nominated for the best picture Academy Award.
Timely and relevant
It may be a superhero film made with effects for entertaining the masses, but Black Panther is also a film that tackles the very important subject of race and prejudice.
While other films examine the African American culture through more historical lenses, Black Panther takes on a more modern-day view, aimed at much younger audiences.
If the film does win, the Academy should forge that Oscar award out of Vibranium.
