Shane Osborn’s Netflix star turn means his Arcane restaurant is no longer a Hong Kong ‘secret’

The Australian chef and restaurateur, who appeared in reality television show ‘The Final Table’, runs his Michelin-starred eatery in a quiet corner of Central

Arcane, which opened five years ago and serves modern European cuisine, is a favourite eatery for the business crowd in and around Central, in Hong Kong.

As the name suggests, Arcane is hidden in a quiet corner of Central, at the far end of On Lan Street, away from the busy streets and noise of the city.

Yet it may not be a foodie secret any more since restaurateur and chef Shane Osborn appeared on the culinary reality television show, The Final Table, which launched late last year on Netflix.

Paired with his fellow-Australian chef Mark Best, the popular duo cooked their way to the finals.

Back in Hong Kong, Osborn has been taking his new-found recognition in his stride as his customers now want selfies with him as well as dinner.

The dishes at Arcane are light and tasty and Yolanda Choy, founder of Central Wedding and co-founder of EcoDrive Hong Kong, who is a regular diner at the restaurant, says the food is healthy, too.

What is Hong Kong’s most traditional dish? … and no, it’s not dim sum
She particularly likes the Japanese fruit tomato with burrata cheese, basil pesto, celtuce and green olives, sautéed potato gnocchi with charred Cevenne onions, and morel and shiitake duxelles and black truffle, while her children love the lemon and yuzu posset with blood orange and yogurt ice cream for dessert.

“I love the quality of the food,” Choy says. “It is prepared delicately with beautiful sauces.

“Businesspeople are more concerned about health these days, and are conscious about their weight so just stick to salads,” she says.

“However, if you just eat protein that is prepared in the right way, people can lose weight just as easily.”

The ambience is warm yet sophisticated, with artwork decking the walls and oak features throughout including the flooring.

There is an open kitchen with a counter for diners to watch the chefs in action, while the restaurant area features tables covered with crisp white table cloths, on top of which are Bernardaud, Zalto and David Mellor silverware and glassware.

The terrace has a New York vibe – thanks to the city’s skyscrapers looming on either side – and is also adorned with plants and herbs, which help top give it pleasing garden feel.

Osborn has won many awards for his cuisine and was the first Australian chef to receive one and two Michelin stars at Pied-a-Terre in London.

Arcane also has a Michelin star and has been in Hong Kong’s 100 Top Tables list for four consecutive years.

The restaurant is also featured in The Diners Club 50 Best Discovery Series, which is part of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
