The influence of K-pop goes far beyond music. Fashion, especially, has embraced the global phenomenon by sitting K-pop influencers at high-profile runway shows in Paris and all over the world. As the year of 2019 comes to a close, we look back at the Korean stars that made a splash in the global fashion arena. Who was the year’s best-dressed style icon to you?

The boys of K-pop behemoth BTS are no stranger to international designers, having worn looks from fashion powerhouses YSL, Dior and Gucci, to name a few, and so that time when they walked the Grammys 2019 red carpet in dashing tuxedos by Korean designers remains among the most monumental appearances of all.

The decision to wear compatriot designers at such an iconic moment – when the whole world would be watching – sent out a strong message that Korea’s talent is world-class and worthy of a global audience. J-Hope sported a tux made by designer Kim Seo-ryong, a regular fixture at Seoul Fashion Week, while V, Jungkook, Jin, Jimin, Suga, and RM all wore custom looks by JayBaek Couture.

Exo’s Chanyeol made headlines at the Tommy Hilfiger show

Exo's Chanyeol, the band's main rapper and now model and fashion royalty, has long been a favourite at Tommy Hilfiger shows. He first attended the TommyNow show at London Fashion Week in 2017, and a year later made such an impression at the Tommy Hilfiger’s Extravaganza that he was named the event’s best-dressed man by Vogue.

Earlier this year, the statuesque K-pop star once again revealed his charms when he graced the 2019 TommyNow event in Paris. Wearing a simple ensemble of jeans and tee, a denim jacket and round spectacles, he was spotted in photos with Zendaya and Gigi Hadid, among others. His appearance made such an impact that #UltimateTommyBoyCHANYEOL trended on Twitter.

Winner’s Mino walked the Louis Vuitton runway

It seems there's no slowing down for K-pop stars in the global fashion arena. This time, Winner's rapper Mino walked the Louis Vuitton runway and stole the show. While the menswear show was cast with celebs and models from all over the world, it was Mino's appearance that shook up the runway – and social media. With his usual cool swagger, Mino made his Paris runway debut clad in a dashing pastel look.

Red Velvet’s Irene stars in a Miu Miu video

This year Red Velvet's leader, Irene, took the ceremonial “Girl in Miu Miu” title. She first made a splash when she appeared at the Miu Miu show at Paris Fashion Week, wearing a gold sequinned mini dress with a diamante bow necklace from the luxury brand's spring 2019 collection.

Months later, Miu Miu would announce Irene as the new face of the brand, and release a promotional video starring the K-pop star.

Frequently clad in Gucci, it's no surprise that Exo's Kai was finally named the fashion house's first Korean brand ambassador in September this year. Kai is noted to have sported full-Gucci looks, whether it's to the airport or at the front row of Gucci fashion shows.

Kai’s “Gucci King” moniker is well-earned: just days after his appointment as brand ambassador, a US$250 silver Gucci ring that he wore sold out. Fans called it their “friendship ring” with the K-idol.

Other than being Chanel’s notorious catwalk-crasher, Blackpink's Jennie – or “Human Chanel” –also made headlines for her appearance at the show, where she was seated front and centre next to Cardi B.

Meanwhile, rapper Lisa caused a stir at the Celine show, where eager fans were lined up outside, hoping to get a glimpse. According to The Hollywood Reporter, fans waited for hours and some even cried in bewilderment after seeing the star.

And then there's lead dancer and main vocalist Rosé at YSL, who attended a fashion show for the first time ever without her bandmates. She wore a sharp-shouldered, double-breasted coat dress from the French brand.

Last but not least is Jisoo, who made the rounds at London Fashion Week. The lead vocalist sat front row at Burberry's spring 2020 show with Dua Lipa and Anwar Hadid, wearing a coordinated tartan wool jacket and mini skirt.
