5 things to know about Chungha, the rising K-pop star and one-time member of Korean girl group I.O.I
The popular Korean singer from girl group I.O.I has just released her first single after recently signing with Nicki Minaj’s label
After more than a year, Chungha issued her pre-release single Stay Tonight on April 27. She has been known for her hit tracks such as Roller Coaster, Gotta Go and Snapping as well as dynamic, eye-catching stage performances.
This time fans and music lovers are anticipating even more, especially since it was announced that she signed on with Nicki Minaj's label in the US in March this year.
Without any further ado, here are five things you should know about the rising star.
1. First artist from MNH Entertainment
When Chungha had first made her appearance on Mnet’s Produce 101 as a trainee, not many had heard of her company, MNH Entertainment. She proved that coming from a small and newly established agency did not mean that she was lacking in skills and eventually emerged as a member of K-pop girl group, I.O.I.
Her debut under the project group also allowed her to be named as the very first artist from MNH Entertainment. After a year of promotion with I.O.I, she debuted as a solo artist with her title track Why Don’t You Know?
2. Specialises in street dance genre, waacking
Waacking is part of the street dance genre and Chungha has been specialising in it for a long time. Her appearance on Mnet’s Hit The Stage had also allowed viewers to get a better understanding of the dance style. She had teamed up with her dance teachers as well as friends to pull off an impactful and impressive waacking performance.
The teaser video for her upcoming track Stay Tonight also suggests that she will be incorporating waacking as well as vogueing in the choreography.
3. She is extremely close with her dancers
Through Instagram pictures and YouTube videos, Chungha has shown a strong connection and chemistry with her dancers.
Some of them have been dancing with her for a long time and some are actually her teachers.
4. She has pet dog named Bambi
Despite her busy schedules, Chungha is able to unwind and relax whenever she gets to play with her pet dog, Bambi, on her rest days. From time to time, the idol updates her fans through selfies taken with Bambi.
5. A fan of Mamamoo’s HwaSa
Chungha’s fangirl dream came true when she managed to collaborate with one of her favourite artists, Mamamoo’s HwaSa! During the 2019 SBS K-pop awards, they both performed together on stage, turning the heat up with their charismatic dance moves.
Chungha later wrote a thank you post to HwaSa on her Instagram.
