K-drama star Lee Bo-young named best actress at Seoul International Drama Awards
The 39-year-old South Korean actress hails ‘unexpected’ win for performance in series ‘Mother’, at Monday’s event that honours television productions from around the world

South Korean actress Lee Bo-young was named best actress at this year’s Seoul International Drama Awards for her performance in the television series Mother.
“I’m very grateful and was not expecting to get this award,” Lee, 39, said at Monday evening’s ceremony.
“I’ve heard from many fans of the programme that they gained comfort and felt their pain had been healed by watching this drama. So did I.”
Mother, a 16-part drama which ended its run in March, tells the story of a junior school teacher, played by Lee, who finds one of her pupils is being abused by her mother, and so decides to kidnap the child and act as her new mother.
The tvN series, which is remake of an award-winning 2010 Japanese television series of the same name, also won the award for best mini-series at the ceremony.
The awards, which honour excellence in television drama films and series from around the world, saw 268 productions from 56 countries in competition – the largest number in the history of the awards.
The grand prize award went to the German drama Babylon Berlin, a period crime drama series set in a chaotic Berlin in 1929, based on the German detective novels by Volker Kutscher.
The best short drama award was won by Germany’s non-fiction drama 54 Hours, with its director, Kilian Riedhoff, claiming the best director award.
Spanish actor Joan Pera was named best actor for his performance in The Power of Silence.
In the hallyu – or Korean wave – drama category that recognises K-dramas that have been recognised overseas, the SBS series While You Were Sleeping won the “top excellence” award, while KBS’ Fight My Way and JTBC’s Something in the Rain were both awarded “excellence” awards.
In the same hallyu category, actor Park Seo-joon won best actor for his role in Fight My Way and Son Ye-jin, who starred in Something in the Rain, was named best actress.
