What has Meghan spent on having a baby – apart from US$65,560 for vegan paint and nursery renovations?

Former actress Meghan Markle – now officially known as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex – has given birth to a son.

She and her husband, Britain’s Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, welcomed their first child, weighing 7 pounds and 3 ounces (3.25kg) at 5.26am on Monday, according to the couple’s Instagram account. He does not yet have a name.

“I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy this morning, a very healthy baby boy,” Harry said on Monday.

“It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension.

“We’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there, it’s been amazing, so we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

Buckingham Palace tweeted confirmation that the duchess went into labour early on Monday following an earlier announcement of the couple’s plans to keep the details surrounding the birth secret until they had had time “to celebrate privately as a new family”.

Raising a royal child isn’t a cheap endeavour – one estimate has put the cost of raising Prince George – the eldest child of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge – to adulthood at US$1 million.

While many details surrounding the birth of the latest royal baby have yet to be revealed (he was not born in the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London, as per royal tradition, according to one report), here’s how much the royal baby has cost so far.

Meghan had a baby shower in Manhattan worth a total of US$200,000, reports said.

American tennis player Serena Williams, a friend of Meghan’s, is believed to have paid for the party, which included a flower-arranging lesson and dessert tasting with a Michelin-star chef.

Williams spent US$75,000 to host the baby shower in a penthouse suite at The Mark, a hotel on the Upper East Side.

The suite is said to include two floors, five bedrooms, four fireplaces, six bathrooms and Central Park views.

Meghan arrived at the shower in style – she reportedly flew from London to New York on a private jet for an estimated US$100,000.

One of Meghan’s friends, who owns the jet, covered the cost as a gift, reports said.

Along with her friends, Meghan also spent her time in New York dining at exclusive restaurants.

Meghan and Harry spent an estimated US$65,560 renovating the nursery at their Frogmore Cottage home, in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

They reportedly installed a green-energy unit and redesigned the nursery in an eco-friendly fashion with help from the interior designer Vicky Charles. They also used a vegan paint with rosemary oils and eucalyptus.

The couple has also spent an estimated US$11,385 on acupuncture and numerology.

Meghan has been regularly receiving acupuncture by a celebrity acupuncturist at an herbal wellness centre leading up to the birth, which can cost about US$8,115 for a year of 45-minute sessions, reports said. The duke is believed to have joined the duchess during these visits.

The couple has also reportedly visited the herbal boutique Ilapothecary in Notting Hill, London, for numerology, which costs US$3,300 for a 12-week programme.

Meghan has been preparing for the royal baby in style – she’s reportedly spent more than US$500,000 on maternity outfits.

Meghan’s maternity wardrobe is worth six figures, Glamour magazine reported. It’s worth noting that royals don’t accept free clothes from brands.

She's spent as much on maternity clothes as she has on her entire pre-maternity wardrobe, which cost about US$510,000, according to reports.

Meghan and Harry are also believed to have gone on a US$43,200 “babymoon” break at Heckfield Place, a five-star luxury spa in Hampshire, England.

Rooms cost up to US$13,100 a night and the couple stayed there for three nights, according to reports.

They were also accompanied by three bodyguards who needed their own rooms.

Heckfield Place serves food from a home farm and features a wellness spa with skincare products that can cost as much as US$170, reports said.

Meghan’s birthing plan hasn’t been confirmed, but she could have spent anywhere from US$1,700 to US$6,500 on it, according to reports.

One report said that Meghan was considering having a home birth with the help of a midwife, although a hospital birth also had not been ruled out.

Some London women are spending about US$2,620 to US$6,550 on an independent midwife during and after labour, according to reports.

Meghan may have planned to use the hypnobirthing technique, a form of hypnotherapy that focuses on mindfulness during labour, according to another report, which said Meghan had hired a doula, which can cost more than US$1,700 for 10 one-hour sessions.

Meghan and Harry will also pay £11 (US$14) for a birth certificate – it’s a small sum, but it’s the first price rise in birth certificates in nine years.

The General Register Office of England and Wales increased the price of birth certificates from £4 in February.

Meghan and Harry reportedly want to hire a bilingual male nanny, too, which can cost up to US$58,550.

Male nannies are a Hollywood trend, with the celebrities Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Biel, Emily Blunt, and Britney Spears all having them, according to reports.

While there’s no word on how much that will cost, William and Catherine’s supernanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, is a graduate of the prestigious Norland College, which teaches nannies who can earn up to US$58,550 in London.

It's likely that a nanny working for the royal family would earn more.

There's also the cost of education, although it's unknown where the new royal baby will attend nursery school.

To put things in perspective, tuition for Princess Charlotte's nursery school is about US$19,500, and Prince George's attendance through year eight at Thomas's Battersea School in London is US$240,800.

Tuition at Eton College, where Prince Harry studied, costs about US$55,800 a year.

If they're like Catherine and William, then Meghan and Harry could spend US$200,000 feeding and clothing the new royal baby.

That's how much the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are estimated to be having to spend per child for two decades – far more than the US$46,000 that the average London family spends, according to reports.
