Classic car detectives close in on James Bond’s long-lost Aston Martin DB5
Hot ‘Goldfinger’ movie’s Aston Martin, stolen in 1997, is ‘somewhere in the Middle East’

The Aston Martin DB5 from the James Bond movie Goldfinger is widely regarded as one of the most important cars in the cinematic history. One of two examples of the car used in the filming of the 1964 classic mysteriously went missing in 1997, from an airport hangar in Florida – a heist worthy of a detective flick in itself. The Daily Telegraph has reported that a company tracing the car has been told that the vehicle has been located somewhere in the Middle East. The tip giving details of the Aston Martin’s current whereabouts has given a new ray of hope after many fruitless years.
Art Recovery International (ARI), hired by the insurance firm to help track down the stolen Aston Martin, has been given the information that it is being held at a specific location. A six-figure sum in British pounds is being offered for information leading to its safe return.
“I have been given a specific tip, but we are working on it. We want to reach out to [the] collector car community and vast array of mechanics to let them know we are very serious about recovering it,” Christopher Marinello, the chief executive of Art Recovery International, told the newspaper. “As there are many Aston Martins, it is very important that we get a shot of the chassis number, dp/216/1. This is what we are looking for, as it is very specific to the vehicle. It is quite possible the potential in the Middle East is a mere lookalike, which is why it is crucial we retain a close-up of the chassis number.”
