How The Great Room’s luxury Hong Kong co-working space aims to inspire creativity
New branch of Singapore-based company has opened a 24,000-square-foot space in One Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay, as part of expansion plans in the city and across Asia
If you want to be inspired, then work somewhere inspiring. That’s the philosophy behind The Great Room, a sophisticated co-working space offering luxury hospitality, which opened recently in One Taikoo Place, in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong.
The brand originates from Singapore where there are already four branches, plus another in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
“We really wanted [to create] a place that people wanted to be in and be inspired,” says Jaelle Ang, co-founder and CEO of The Great Room, who was in Hong Kong last week.
Ang has a background in hotel development, including working for the Four Seasons Hotel and Capella Hotel in Bangkok, and her experience in luxury is reflected in the stunning design of her latest venture.
When entering the 24,000-square-foot space at One Taikoo Place, it looks and feels just like a five-star hotel lounge, with plenty of comfortable plush seating around coffee tables and artwork on the walls. And talking of coffee, there is a bar and cafe section to the side of this area.
The lounge area features city views through its large windows.
The Great Room provides 360-degree-views so that all of its office and meeting spaces are light and airy.
The area houses meeting rooms and smaller work spaces which includes the Stateroom – an elegant boardroom for up to 10 people – and the Atelier, which can seat eight people. The Study rooms are more intimate, while the Studios can open up to form a larger space for events and conferences.
Work is not measured by how many hours you spend behind a computer, but with common ideas and collaborations. So why wouldn't we spend more time and energy designing the perfect ground for these interactions to take place.
The Great Room has been designed by HASSELL, the architecture, design and urban planning practice which also designed Manhattan Bar, Atlas Bar and Regent Hotel in Singapore.
It has used warm timbers, cool metals and leather throughout. Meticulous detailing, such as hand-dyed, acoustic-absorbing carpet tiles, have been used with rugs, and arched doorways provide a sense of depth.
The welcoming vibe creates an ideal space to forge friendships or, as The Great Room calls it, casual collisions.
“Work is not measured by how many hours you spend behind a computer, but with common ideas and collaborations,” Ang says. “So why wouldn't we spend more time and energy designing the perfect ground for these interactions to take place.”
Members can enjoy a regular Monday Morning Breakfast Club, a turndown cart in the evenings offering hot chocolate and cookies and hosted events including Fireside Chats, Lunch and Learn, and Spend the Night With.
Ang says that the idea of offering luxury co-working spaces has been done in Europe and North America, but not as much in Asia.
The company plans to expand the concept further in Hong Kong and other Asian cities – with another branch opening at Raffles Singapore this summer.
