Six of the world’s top 50 bars are now in Singapore

Think Singapore has no cocktail scene to speak of? You might want to reconsider those sentiments

In the strongest showing ever from bars in Singapore, six local watering-holes made it into the World’s 50 Best Bars list of 2017, which was unveiled in London yesterday evening (Oct 5).

The top performing bar from Singapore is Regent Hotel’s Manhattan, which rose four spots up from No. 11 to No. 7, retaining its title as Best Bar in Asia. Earlier this year, it also topped the list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars.

No. 15 on the list, is Atlas Grand Lobby & Bar which opened in March this year to much fanfare for its gin collection and opulent interior decor.

Located at Parkview Square, the lobby bar is also the highest new entry of the list this year.

Another new entrant to the list at No. 47 is Native, located at Amoy Street, which also opened earlier this year.

In the Asia’s 50 Best Bars List (2017), Native clinched the No. 20 spot and at the home-grown Bar Awards in June, head bartender Vijay Mudaliar won Most Creative Cocktail Bar and Bartender of the Year.

Other Singapore bars which made the global list include Operation Dagger (No. 24), down three places, and 28 HongKong Street (No. 25), down 11 places from last year.

Re-entering the list this year at No. 31 is Tippling Club, which was placed No. 45 the last time it landed on the list in 2013.

In a quote carried by The Straits Times, William Drew, 45, group editor of The World’s 50 Best Bars, said Singapore’s showing in the list was “reflective of the growth in quality, diversity, innovation and buzz in the bar scene in Singapore”.

“It is genuinely one of the most exciting cities in the world now for cocktail lovers and I think any discerning drinker who has visited Singapore in the last couple of years would not be surprised by these results,” he added.

Additionally, he said that Singapore “sits in the top tier of the global cocktail scene, fast catching up the big beasts of London and New York”.

In the first and second spot was The American Bar at the Savoy Hotel and Dandelyan at Mondrian Hotel, both located in London. Third place went to The NoMad from New York.

The Dead Rabbit, last year’s top bar and a Wall Street favourite, fell to the fourth spot this year.

Compared to before, Asian bars have grown in representation, with 12 bars in total from Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan making the list.

Taking over from London-based Drinks International magazine, this year’s list was released by William Reed Business Media, who also organises The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants lists.

Now in its ninth year, the list is an annual ranking of bars voted by more than 500 drinks experts from 55 countries worldwide.
