5 new food joints to visit in Kuala Lumpur

Round-up of new cafes and restaurants in the Malaysian capital includes a florist-cafe, a hidden gem and a Japanese restaurant with the freshest sashimi

1. Outpost Mont Kiara

Mont Kiara welcomes a new coffee spot powered by Outcast Coffee, crepe cakes and a small selection of savoury pastries – think shepherd’s pie and soon, bagel sandwiches.

We’re giving it bonus points for the outdoor area and its bright, cosy interior – and a thumbs-up for the almost 100 per cent natural lighting.

Address: Shoplex Mont Kiara

Opening hours:

Monday to Thursday, 8am to 7pm

Weekends, 10am to10pm

2. Anther & Stigma Floral Cafe

Could florist-cafes be the next trend in Kuala Lumpur?

One thing's for sure though – Plaza Arkadia is fast becoming a foodies’ paradise.

Being so new to the scene, the variety at Anther & Stigma isn’t vast, but it is enough to sate your appetite on your first visit, with options such as the salted gula melaka granola bowl, cakes, sandwiches and pasta.

Messy Monday. See you on Sunday.

3. Drop KL

After 18 successful years in Hong Kong’s nightlife scene – even to the extent of attracting the likes of celebrities including Sting and Gwyneth Paltrow – Drop Hong Kong has extended its reach to Kuala Lumpur.

A Modern American restaurant and lounge, you’re invited to eat and taste the contrasting flavours; drink and tantalise your spirit with handcrafted molecular cocktails; and ‘drop‘ your best dance moves at the exclusive private rooftop space with cool tunes and a vast view of the Royal Selangor Golf Club’s lush greenery.

Address: The Terraces @ TREC KL

Opening hours: 5pm till late (closed on Sunday and Monday)

Telephone: 03 2110 4343

4. Bukku Cafe

It’s not newly opened, but it most certainly is quite a hidden gem (at the time of writing).

From the front, it boasts a monochromatic façade.

Enter through the doors and it’s a party of warm, wooden interiors.

The food here is decent – try the salted egg croissants – but it's really the quiet, cosy ambience that will make you want to stay.

5. Fincch Sushi Room

If we have to describe Fincch Sushi Room in one sentence, it's that it gets its ingredients from Tokyo’s huge Tsukiji Fish Market.

Yet, really, every dish – sashimi indulgences aside – will make you salivate.
