Which McCartney has joined the Green Monday vegan movement?

The vegan movement is growing by the day.

Green Common founder David Yeung has launched Green Monday in Taiwan, following its successful launch in Singapore, a move that brought Right Treat’s meatless pork Omnipork and ranges offered by plant-based Beyond Meat to the market. Green Monday is a non-profit organisation that advocates eating no meat on Mondays as part of a healthier diet and reduced carbon footprint.

Joining Yeung at the Taiwan launch was Golden Horse Award-winning actress Karena Lam, who will be Green Monday’s Greater China ambassador and chief eco curator, a role that has seen her curate two art exhibitions in Hong Kong to raise awareness for the cause.

“Phasing out meat has positively influenced my diet, consumption habits and wellness,” Lam says. “I see a smooth transition towards a vegetarian diet. I urge everyone to go plant-based at least one day a week, and help save Mother Earth. If we get enough people to join, perhaps we can make change happen.”

Restaurants taking part in the Green Monday movement in Taiwan will be working with Omnipork, Beyond, and the plant-based dairy-free cheese Daiya.

“With almost one in every five people practising vegetarianism/veganism, we see a huge demand for innovative, nutritious and sustainable plant-based products in Taiwan,” says Yeung.

McCartney power

In the vanguard of calling for a greener diet for a greener planet is Paul McCartney’s daughter, Mary McCartney, who is a photographer and artist. Stella McCartney’s sister is also a plant-based advocate, and acts as an adviser and impact investor for Green Common and Green Monday.

“Establishing a global alliance by teaming up with Green Monday is a crucial step forward,” McCartney said during her visit to Hong Kong. “It’s not just me with Meat Free Monday in the UK, and David with Green Monday in Hong Kong. It’s a global awareness campaign.”

“Addressing climate change and animal welfare are global issues close to my heart. Through my involvement with Meat Free Monday in Europe I have become aware and very impressed by the impact created by Green Monday. David has created an innovative social venture that delivers practical and scalable solutions. I am joining forces with Green Monday to further accelerate the growth and the expansion in Asia and globally. I believe making changes in Asia and around the world is crucial for the future of our beautiful plant.”

Yeung says a link has existed since long before McCartney officially came into the picture.

“The blueprint of Green Monday is partially inspired by Meat Free Monday which was founded by Sir Paul, Mary and Stella. We share the common goal of mobilising the world towards a healthy, sustainable and cruelty-free diet. It is a dream to partner with Mary and her family to bring change to Asia and across the world. Her experience, network and influence will be invaluable for the growth of our organisation and the impact we hope to create.”

Green Common also announced that film director James Cameron and his environmental advocate wife, Suzy Cameron, and conservationist and Musings founder Suzy Rockefeller will be joining the movement as advisers and impact investors. James Cameron’s documentary, The Game Changers, explores the impact a plant-based diet could have on climate change.
