6 new Sydney hotels to check into for the ultimate city escape

Take a look at these unpretentious and stylish places for a generous serving of laid-back Australian vibe and culture

Views of the iconic bridge are one thing, but you can even beat the traffic by calling a water taxi to pick you up from your own private jetty while staying at Airbnb Birchgrove.

Sydney, the city that is impossible not to fall in love with, just keeps upping its game, especially when it comes to hospitality. Unpretentious, stylish and with that laid-back Australian vibe and culture, here are six recently opened options to get some quality shut-eye next time you are in town.

Little Albion Guest House

Heritage accommodation always comes with its own dose of charm and Little Albion embodies this feel in unpretentious style. The former convent in the swish suburb of Surry Hills dates back to 1903. Its original features remain, melded with the modern luxuries and tech needs that we all crave.

The red brick building houses a surprisingly wide variety of rooms, from the admittedly tiny “crash pad” or “cosy”, up to the Big Albion suite. An art collection, custom-made furniture and elegant honour bar ensure that this reimagined guest house is a popular choice with domestic and global visitors.

The William Inglis Hotel

Warwick Farm in the city’s southwest is not known as a hotel destination, but the first luxury property there may just change that. The William Inglis is part of the boutique MGallery collection by French hotel giant Accor and sits in the heart of a 26-acre stables complex owned by Sydney’s most famous equestrian family.

The luxury property has 144 rooms, all of which are named after horses trained by the family, with their most renowned winners saved for their biggest suites. A Talisa Spa, fitness centre and ninth floor outdoor swimming pool allow you to work off dishes from their three restaurants and bars.

Skye Hotel Suites

Smack in the middle of the central business district comes what is billed as the city’s first boutique serviced flats. The 25 storey SKYE Suites Sydney offer studio, one- and two-bedrooms suites for short term or longer stays.

Sleek kitchen conveniences include Delonghi appliances and a Vittoria coffee machine – well, this is a coffee city with few equals – while facilities include a beautifully designed pool, gym and laundry. The property’s location off Skittle Lane reflects the laneway’s former role as a bowling alley for 19th century sailors and soldiers.

The Collectionist Hotel

A quirky new option is The Collectionist where, when you check in, you’re escorted through the hotel to pick the room that you would like from four esoteric categories – Bootstrap, Moonshiner, Tinkerer and Artisan. That translates as a selection of individually designed and furnished bedrooms which reflect colourful collaborations from some of Australia’s leading design studios and artists – and the opposite of a faceless global hotel chain.

Sitting between buzzy Newtown and hipster Glebe, The Collectionist gives guests an eclectic choice of dining, drinking and nightlife options within easy reach. One thing they definitely don’t offer is clear when you read about their “Strict no TV” policy.

The Paramount House Hotel

The former home of Paramount Picture Studios has turned into one of the most chic new places to stay in always-fashionable Surry Hills. The refurbished 1940s building now offers 29 rooms, a bar, rooftop wellness space with complimentary classes, a cinema – naturally – and the Paramount Coffee Project café.

The size of rooms ranges from “nook” to “mack daddy” while the design look and feel is described as “a mix of heritage with the new”. Business travellers will also be drawn in by “The Office Space”, a luxury office which looks like it is straight from the set of Mad Men, thanks to its 1960s New York vibe.

Airbnb, Birchgrove

As always these days, there are plenty of alternatives to traditional hotel stays. Airbnb list hundreds of properties across Sydney, but few can match the views from this four-bedroom, three-bathroom house in Birchgrove, sitting right on Sydney Harbour.

Views of the iconic bridge are one thing, but you can even beat the traffic by calling a water taxi to pick you up from your own private jetty. If you do want to get your feet wet, you also have your own saltwater swimming pool.

Throw in the striking modern architecture of this 2011 home and you’ll understand why it has featured in Australian lifestyle TV shows.

At HK$4,723 (US$602) per night for a property that can sleep up to eight, you can also see why it’s booked up well in advance.
