How Cartier’s Les Galaxies collection makes the stars tremble

Artisans use special techniques to make precious stones move

For Les Galaxies de Cartier collection, the serti vibrant (trembling setting) technique is used to animate the stones, turning them into glittering stars.

Cartier gives the Milky Way a makeover with its new Les Galaxies de Cartier collection. The cosmos is the central theme of this limited-edition series which allowed artisans to push the frontiers of high-jewellery making.

Les Galaxies de Cartier is also the first collection in which the French luxury house has used metaquartzite, the metamorphic rock with golden inclusions of pyrite, set in the Trembling Stars bracelet and ring. The brand uses a miniaturised version of its original technique – serti vibrant (trembling setting) – to animate the stones, turning them into glittering stars.

For the Fractal Meteor bracelet, diamonds, milky quartz, rose gold and opalescent moonstone are configured in an irregular mesh to achieve an almost celestial diffraction of light across the wrist. The Alignment of the Planets bracelet blends visual and tactile design elements: a white-gold cage bracelet encompasses polished black Tahitian pearls, allowing them to roll gently – visually emulating the orbital movement of planets.

For pure visual delight, the Earth’s Lights ring, bracelet and necklace offer a constellation of coloured stones. The yellow sapphires, blue sapphires, opals and diamonds are strategically mounted on concentric rails on each of the pieces, which allow for scintillating movement that simulates the sheer beauty of the night sky.
