French Connection

Officially opened at the end of May, The exhibition “From Lorient to the Orient - Port Cities of China and France on the 18th Century Maritime Silk Route”, organised by the Macao Museum as part of the 26th Macao Arts Festival and Le French May, will run until the end of August. The showcased items, which include textiles, costumes, oil paintings, prints, porcelain and moulds, include those on loan from various authorities in France such as the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes de Lorient and Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon.

This event introduces visitors to Lorient, a port on the northwest Atlantic coast of France. It was through this hub that the French East India Company, established by King Louis XIV, imported many foreign goods, including silk, tea and porcelain from China. It was also because of these Eurasian trading activities that Chinoiserie became popular in Europe, extensively influencing French art works and daily commodities. Admssion MOP15.

Rainy Days

For a glimpse of life in Macau in times not so long ago, photography is a great medium. Also opened at the end of May, “Heavy Rain and Floods” at Macao Museum of Art is a free exhibition running until November 8 to showcase photographs by local talent Choi Vun Tim depicting the the San Kio district in the 1960s.

The area, located about one kilometre to the north from the Senado Square, has traditionally been a poorer neighbourhood, and it was susceptible to flooding during 1960s-70s because it was a low-laying region near the shore. You can’t tell now after reclamation has moved the waterfront further away.

Choi, who learned his art from Chinese YMCA Photographic Society Hong Kong and the Chinese Photographic Association of Hong Kong, has injected his artistic style to documentary photography that shows images of San Kio residents combating adverse weather while going on with daily life. Entry fee MOP5.

Open 10am-7pm (closed Mon)

Local expressions

The change Macau is going through is not just limited to its city development; it is also in its population. You can see it through the lens of art at "Happiness", a duo exhibition at Art For All Society studio in Hac Sa featuring local artists Jose Dores and Cai Guo Jie. Dores is a locally born Portuguese, and has spent much of recent time in refining his oil paintings, which he uses to express his world views as someone who’s been striving for success since teenage years. Cai is from Taiwan, but he was so fascinated by Macau when he visited five years ago that he decided to relocate to the territory a year later. He loves colonial architecture as a topic but his water drawings are inspired by calligraphy, forming an artistic style that is uniquely his. The open opens at 6:30pm on June 12, and will remain open to the public for free every Mon-Sat from noon-7pm until July 11.
