Armed drug dealers killed in shootout with police in Malaysia
The superintendent-in-charge claims they 'were forced to fire back when the men continued shooting despite a second warning'
Two heavily armed drug dealers were killed when they opened fire on a team of policemen closing in on them in a remote plantation in the east coast Kunak district in East Malaysia.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Abdul Harun said the men, in their 30s, were killed in the shootout early yesterday.
He said acting on information, Kunak police chief Superintendent Mohd Nasaruddin Nasir had led the team to a hut in the plantation in Ulu Tingkayu, a two-hour drive from Kunak.
“Upon arriving there at about 1.30am, the team noticed some movements in the hut,” he said yesterday.
He said that after Superintendent Nasaruddin called out to identify themselves as the police, the men in the hut began firing at them.
The police, he said, were forced to fire back when the men continued shooting despite a second warning,
The shootout lasted between two and three minutes, at the end of which the police found the bodies of the men sprawled in the hut.
The duo, who were also believed to be robbers and drug smugglers, did not have any identification on them.
Police also recovered several weapons including homemade shotguns, an airgun, a .45 Colt pistol, a .38 revolver, a parang, bullets and spent cartridges.
They also found three packets containing substance believed to be syabu.
