Malaysia sent an Air Asia plane to China’s Wuhan on Monday to bring back 141 people and also deliver 500,000 pairs of gloves to the country hit by the coronavirus outbreak, the National Disaster Management Agency said.

Malaysian Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said that all of those on board – including 12 flight crew and six embassy staff who travelled overland from Beijing to prepare for the evacuation – would have to undergo a mandatory 14 day quarantine upon their return.

Only those who pass an initial health screening in Wuhan will be able to board the five-hour flight, and will be subject to extensive monitoring, screening and disinfection procedures throughout, Dzulkefly said

Upon landing at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, they will be sent straight to an isolated building on a special bus for decontamination and entry screening.

“Those who display symptoms will be brought to the hospital while those who do not will be taken to a surveillance centre nearby. They will not be allowed to go home and meet their families for at least 14 days,” Dzulkefly told a media conference.

The number of people infected in Malaysia remains at eight, all of them visiting Chinese nationals, the government said on Monday.

Malaysia is the world’s biggest producer of gloves and its companies such as Top Glove Corporation have ramped up production to meet rising demand from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The industry has also vowed to donate gloves to China.
