The first smartphone running on ByteDance’s artificial intelligence agentic phone assistant sold out on the first day, as consumers jumped at the chance to try the AI-powered gadget that could change the way people use mobile phones.
The ZTE Nubia M153, an “engineering prototype” only available for order online, was keenly sought after thanks to ByteDance’s embedded operating-system-level Doubao Mobile Assistant, which is able to carry out tasks such as booking restaurants or editing photos via voice commands.
Neither ByteDance nor ZTE disclosed the number of Nubia M153s available for purchase.
The joint effort from TikTok owner ByteDance and ZTE, a second-tier Chinese smartphone maker, is the latest example of China’s advantages in combining AI capabilities with conventional consumer gadgets to bring the power of AI to ordinary consumers.
The limited-availability prototype phone, priced at 3,499 yuan (US$494), had sold out by Monday evening. Customer service was asking buyers to submit requests for the number of phones they wanted to purchase, as production would be tailored based on demand.

The scarcity immediately inflated prices on the second-hand market. On Xianyu, an online flea market owned by Alibaba Group Holding, the phone was being resold for up to 4,999 yuan, a 43 per cent premium to the original price. Alibaba owns the Post.
The joint ByteDance-ZTE effort also marks a new moment in mobile phone marketing, as the main selling point was the smartphone’s “software” instead of its “hardware” specs. Before the AI version of the Nubia handset, Shenzhen-based ZTE had gradually been losing relevance in the smartphone market both at home and abroad.
However, the jury is still out on whether AI powerhouses like ByteDance can win in the smart hardware market through partnerships with third-party gadget makers.
In a report on Monday, Morgan Stanley said the outlook for ByteDance’s AI assistant “looks challenging” because the operating-system-level integration “weakens [original equipment manufacturers’] bargaining power in the supply chain”.
“Major smartphone OEMs including Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi with strong technology capabilities are more likely to self-develop this AI assistant rather than partnering with ByteDance,” the report said.
Guo Tianxiang, IDC China research manager, agreed, noting that ByteDance would “struggle to form deep collaborations with major smartphone manufacturers”. Guo predicted that the company would be “relegated to empowering smaller manufacturers”.
ZTE’s Nubia is not a well-known brand in the local market and has never made it into the top five.
ByteDance’s move into AI phone assistants is its latest attempt to navigate the smartphone market. A video demonstration released on Monday showed how the assistant could tell a story from a picture, edit the pedestrians out of a photo, identify the lowest price of the same product on multiple shopping apps, and make purchases with the user’s consent.
