The world’s top 10 Chinese billionaires are all self-made men and none of them were born in the year of the goat, a survey released today shows.

The survey by ultra high net worth consultancy firm Wealth-X found that the richest three Chinese billionaires were born in the year of the dragon, considered the most auspicious Chinese zodiac year.

Hong Kong business magnate Li Ka-shing retains the number one ranking with a net worth of US$30.6 billion.

In second place is another Hong Kong old guard, Lee Shau-kee, the chairman of Henderson Land Development, whose fortune is estimated to be US$26.6 billion.

The September public offering of Alibaba, the largest in history, propelled the ecommerce giant’s chairman Jack Ma Yun’s net worth to a close third at US$26.5 billion.

Four out of the top 10 amassed their fortunes in the technology business.

Besides Ma, phonemaker Xiaomi’s Lei Jun, Baidu’s Robin Li and Tencent’s Pony Ma make the list.

Pony Ma, 43, is the youngest person on the list while Robert Kuok often referred to as Malaysia’s “Sugar King” and owner of SCMP Group is the oldest at 91.

Cheng Yu-tung, who owns New World Development and the world’s largest jewellery brand Chow Tai Fook, placed ninth.

Macau gambling tycoon and Galaxy Entertainment Group chairman Lui Che-woo rounds out the top 10.

The year of the goat begins on Thursday, or Lunar New Year, at the close of the preceding year of the horse.
