China will work with Russia to maintain the stability of global multilateral trade and supply chains, President Xi Jinping said in Moscow on Thursday during talks with his Russian counterpart at the Kremlin.
“China is willing to work with Russia to shoulder the special responsibilities entrusted by the times and maintain the stability and smooth operation of the global multilateral trading system, industrial chains, and supply chains,” Xi said to Vladimir Putin.
Amid rising pressure from US President Donald Trump’s trade war, Xi said China and Russia had a special responsibility to oppose unilateralism and power politics.
“Today, in the face of unilateralist backflows and acts of power politics and bullying on the international stage, China will join Russia in shouldering our special responsibilities as major countries and permanent members of the UN Security Council.”


Addressing the media after the talks, Putin said economic ties had deepened between the two nations in part because of payment settlements in national currencies.
This, Putin said, had enabled a system of trade “reliably protected from the influence of third countries and negative trends in world markets”.
Putin said he and Xi discussed key regional and international issues, adding that Russia and China “coincide or are very close” in their approaches to those matters.
“Both countries pursue independent and autonomous foreign policies and are interested in forming a more just and democratic multipolar world order,” Putin said, according to the Kremlin.
Earlier, in his opening remarks, Putin said he appreciated the opportunity to have a direct conversation with his “dear friend”, adding that he would be glad to visit China to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the war with Japan.
According to the Kremlin, Putin also noted that servicemen from the People’s Liberation Army of China would be the “largest foreign military contingent” taking part in a Victory Day parade on Friday.
Putin added that the military brotherhood between the two countries that developed during the war years was “one of the fundamental foundations of modern Russian-Chinese relations”.
“Together with our Chinese friends, we firmly stand guard over the historical truth, protect the memory of the events of the war years, and counteract modern manifestations of neo-Nazism and militarism,” he said.

The Russian President said that Russia and China’s intention to strengthen friendship and expand cooperation was based on “strategic interaction” and those ties were for the benefit of both countries and “not against anyone”.
He confirmed that the two presidents discussed politics and security, industrial cooperation, cultural ties, and economic and energy issues.
After the talks, the two countries signed an agreement to deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership, and others on investment, agriculture, digital economy, science, education, biosafety, global security, and maintaining the authority of international law.
Before the meeting, Putin rolled out the red carpet at the Kremlin for Xi. Among the Chinese delegation are Xi’s chief of staff Cai Qi, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao.
This is Xi’s 11th trip to Russia since taking office in 2013, and his third meeting with Putin so far this year – following a video call in January and a phone call in February.
Xi’s trip to Moscow comes as China is grappling with immense pressure from the US after President Donald Trump imposed some of his toughest tariffs on Chinese products.
Responding with retaliatory levies to imports from the US, China has also portrayed itself as a stable and long-term partner committed to economic integration and global order during turbulent times, courting countries from Southeast Asia to Europe and Latin America.
Senior officials from China and the US are set to meet in Switzerland later this week, in discussions that may allow the two sides to test each other’s positions before walking into a lengthy process of trade negotiations.
Putin, who has faced isolation from the West since his invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, has moved closer to China, whose purchases of Russian energy and other raw materials have helped keep Russia’s much-sanctioned economy afloat.

In a show of solidarity, Xi will also be what Putin described as a “main guest” in the Red Square parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
An estimated 27 million Soviet citizens perished in the war, and more than 35 million Chinese lost their lives during the Japanese invasion.
Xi landed in Moscow on Wednesday for a four-day state visit. In a written speech at the airport, Xi reaffirmed that China stood with Russia to safeguard “the victorious legacies” of World War II.
“In the face of … a volatile international landscape fraught with instability, China and Russia … will jointly safeguard the outcomes of World War II, firmly uphold the UN-centred international system and the international order underpinned by international law, resolutely oppose hegemonism and power politics,” he said.
