Beijing has urged Chinese nationals in Iran to take security precautions as the risk of US air strikes grows, with no sign of a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme.
In an advisory early on Saturday, China’s embassy in Tehran said there were “external security risks that have risen significantly” and Chinese nationals in Iran should “closely monitor changes in the security situation and strengthen their safety awareness”.
Hours earlier, the foreign ministry in Beijing used similar language when it urged its citizens to leave Iran as soon as possible, warning there had been a “significant increase in external security risks” in Iran. It said Chinese citizens should not travel to the country.


The Saturday advisory did not insist its citizens leave, but said Chinese in Iran should “refrain from photographing sensitive sites such as government institutions and military facilities” and “avoid accidentally taking photos of or entering restricted areas”.
The embassy also advised those planning to travel by air to stay up to date on flight information.
In a social media post on Friday, the foreign ministry said Chinese embassies and consulates in Iran and neighbouring countries “will provide necessary assistance to Chinese citizens for relocation via commercial flights or land routes”.
The US and Iran held a third round of indirect talks on Iran’s nuclear programme, mediated by Oman, in Geneva on Thursday but did not reach a deal.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump said he was “not happy” but indicated he would give negotiators more time.
“I’m not happy with the fact that they’re not willing to give us what we have to have. I’m not thrilled with that. We’ll see what happens. We’re talking later,” Trump said.
“We’re not exactly happy with the way they’re negotiating. They cannot have nuclear weapons.”
However, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who has been mediating the talks, said significant progress had been made in the discussions.
In an interview with CBS News on Friday, he said both sides had agreed that “Iran will never, ever have a nuclear material that will create a bomb”.
“This is something completely new. It really makes the enrichment argument less relevant, because now we are talking about zero stockpiling,” he said, noting there would be “zero accumulation, zero stockpiling” and full verification by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations’ atomic watchdog.
“If the ultimate objective is to ensure forever that Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb, I think we have cracked that problem through these negotiations by agreeing a very important breakthrough that has never been achieved any time before. And I think if we can capture that and build on it, I think a deal is within our reach,” he said.

Escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran and the build-up of US military forces in the region have prompted several countries – including Australia, India, South Korea and Sweden – to issue similar travel or evacuation warnings.
Also on Friday, the Chinese embassy in Israel urged its citizens to closely monitor security alerts issued by the Israeli government.
It told them to strengthen emergency preparedness, familiarise themselves with nearby bomb shelters and evacuation routes, and avoid designated extreme high-risk areas, including the northern border and the region near Gaza.
On Thursday, foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China supported the use of political and diplomatic channels to solve problems and opposed the use of threats or force.
“China supports the Iranian government and people in upholding their nation’s stability and legitimate rights and interests,” she said.
Fears of another Middle East conflict have risen as the US continues to build up its fleet of warships and planes in the region.


Trump says he wants to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and to stop enriching uranium.
Tehran denies it has any intention of developing weapons and says it has a right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
Following the talks in Geneva on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on social media that this round of talks had been “the most intense so far”.
“It concluded with the mutual understanding that we will continue to engage in a more detailed manner on matters that are essential to any deal – including sanctions termination and nuclear-related steps,” he wrote.
The US and Iran held multiple rounds of talks last year, but they fell apart after Israel launched a brief war against Iran in June, followed by US strikes on multiple Iranian nuclear facilities.
