China and Australia should intensify exchanges on energy security amid complex global geopolitics, Canberra said on Tuesday as spillover from the US-Israel war against Iran continued to endanger the world economy.
In a phone conversation on Tuesday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Chinese Premier Li Qiang discussed the importance of energy security “in light of the current global challenges” and agreed to increase government-to-government communication to support regional energy security.
In a social media post, Albanese said: “Now more than ever, our relationships with our neighbours matter. We will continue to engage in dialogue to maintain our stable and constructive relationship.”


The call was held on Tuesday afternoon as the clock ticked down towards US President Donald Trump’s deadline of promised heavy attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure. However, Iran and the US, brokered by Pakistan, agreed on Wednesday morning to a two-week ceasefire and peace talks to start in Islamabad on Friday.
Li said Beijing was ready to deepen political trust and expand practical cooperation with Australia, while also calling on Canberra to “steer their bilateral relationship in the right direction”, according to a Chinese statement on the meeting.
After years of tension, China-Australia relations have shown signs of stabilising. A visit by Albanese to Beijing in July signalled a reset that reopened high-level dialogue and revived economic and trade exchanges, even as sharp differences persisted on regional flashpoints and critical minerals.
During the conversation, Li described Australia as an “important partner”, while Albanese’s office said high-level engagement was central to a “mature, stable and constructive relationship”.
Li was quoted as saying: “China is ready to work with Australia to … maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen communication and coordination, build political trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly uphold multilateralism and free trade.
“This will add impetus to both countries’ development and provide greater stability for the region and the world.”
On the economic front, Li highlighted the strong internal momentum and long-term potential of China-Australia trade ties and pledged to expand domestic demand, boost consumption and keep its vast market open to the world.
“Beijing is willing to import more high-quality Australian products, expand and upgrade bilateral trade, accelerate the review and upgrade of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, and support market-driven cooperation between enterprises,” he said.
Li also pointed to green cooperation as a major opportunity, offering to strengthen collaboration in clean energy, new energy vehicles, energy storage, carbon reduction and other fields.
Albanese was quoted in the Chinese statement as reaffirming Canberra’s long-standing one-China policy and expressing hope to expand cooperation in trade, investment, mining, clean energy and people-to-people exchanges while managing differences with mutual respect.
In Australia’s statement on the meeting, Albanese reiterated that Australia would cooperate “where we can, disagree where we must and engage in the national interest”.
Both leaders signalled continued momentum ahead of Li’s planned visit to Australia later this year and the Australian leader said he looked forward to visiting China for the Apec summit in November, where he is expected to meet Li.
The phone call comes as the US-Israeli war on Iran has driven up global oil prices, disrupted supply chains and laid bare discord between Washington and its allies.
Trump lashed out at a host of American allies, including Australia, on Tuesday, saying they refused to back his military operations against Tehran.
Australia relies on imports for an estimated 90 per cent of its refined petroleum products, most of it coming from Asia. China is a major source of aviation fuel for Australia as well as a big importer of Australian liquefied natural gas (LNG).


In a bid to counter China’s dominance in critical minerals supply chains as well as market volatility and geopolitical shocks, Australia’s parliament passed legislation on Tuesday empowering the country’s export credit agency to buy, stockpile and trade fuels and rare earths.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is planning to visit Australia between late April and early May Australia. During the trip, the two countries are expected to “affirm the need to “enhance” joint military exercises and finalise a concrete agreement on strengthening rare earth supply chains, according to Kyodo.
Against the backdrop of Tokyo’s deteriorating ties with Beijing, Takaichi is also set to discuss energy security with Albanese, as Australia remains a crucial supplier of LNG, coal and critical minerals to Japan.
