The highest number of senior provincial-level officials to be caught under the government’s crackdown on corruption worked in the southern province of Guangdong, according to a newspaper report.

Ninety senior officials have been formally accused of corruption by anti-graft investigators since President Xi Jinping launched the anti-corruption initiative in late 2012, The Beijing News reported.

Hubei is second highest with 61 officials, the newspaper said.

Sichuan, Henan and Shanxi followed, with 54, 52 and 50 cadres accused of carrying out offences.

Fifteen provinces have each caught more than 20 cadres, the newspaper said.

The report did not say if the officials have been convicted in court for corruption offences.

The 90 officials in Guangdong include top leaders in at least seven cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan.

Shanxi is one of the centres of the government’s anti-corruption campaign and seven provincial-level officials from vice governor to department heads have stepped down in disgrace, the report said.
