Top young Chinese scientists are returning home from Cambridge, Massachusetts – a city that houses some of America’s most renowned universities – at a higher rate than anywhere else in the world, according to a new study.
A team of population geographers looked at around 1,250 Chinese researchers who moved back to mainland China over 12 years from 2009. They found that Beijing was the most favoured destination, accounting for more than a third of the returnees. A further 17 per cent opted for Shanghai, the second most popular destination.
Without providing their exact figures, they said Cambridge was the largest source of returnees, and also the “primary source of returning talent to Beijing and Shanghai”.
The researchers added that Singapore was the main source for those who moved to Nanjing, while those leaving Hong Kong for the mainland favoured Guangzhou and Wuhan.
Cambridge is home to world-renowned institutions such as Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, along with biotech firms such as Moderna and Pfizer, which both developed their own mRNA Covid vaccines.
The city, which forms part of the greater Boston metropolitan area, is also known for Kendall Square, an area described as “the most innovative square mile on the planet” and is home to hundreds of start-ups focusing on biotech research and innovation.
For the study, researchers from the faculty of geography of Tianjin Normal University and the National Academy of Innovation Strategy, a Beijing-based think tank, looked into the education and career profiles of scientists who had studied or worked outside mainland China and then returned to benefit from the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund.
The study, published in the Chinese-language journal Tropical Geography on Monday, found that around 1,250 scientists fit this profile and accounted for around half the total beneficiaries from the fund, which is open to male researchers under the age of 45 and women under 48.


The study looked at where overseas recipients had been based before returning to the mainland, and found that the main Asian sources were Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo.
Further afield, the United States accounted for the largest number of returnees, with Cambridge at the top of the list followed by two locations in California – Palo Alto and Berkeley.
“With China’s rapid development … the gap between the economic development levels and technological innovation capabilities of China and the United States has significantly narrowed,” the study said.
It said another factor was the “baseless accusations and suspicions” Chinese people faced in the US – a reference to projects such as the China Initiative, which was launched in 2018 and targeted scientists suspected of having links to Beijing and stealing technology.
Hundreds of researchers with Chinese heritage were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a result, but according to the US Department of Justice it only resulted in eight convictions for offences such as academic fraud and trade theft.
The latest Nature Index, which ranks institutions for their contributions to major scientific journals, put China well ahead in the field of physics.
The latest study also said social networks of friends and family in China were an “important pull factor”.
“The low level of social and cultural integration of high-level Chinese talents in developed countries like the US and Britain is a significant driving force behind their outflow,” the study said.
It said other factors included academic and social ties and the prospect of higher incomes and better research opportunities.
