Police in southwestern China have posted photos online that show a young man sitting in the boot of a moving car while taking a selfie on his mobile phone.

In the picture, the boot door is wide while the man, wearing a black and white jacket sits sideway in an upright, to one side, posing for the camera while taking a picture.

Police in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, said the Toyota car in the picture was heading from Xinjin county to Qionglai county.  Both the man’s face and the car’s number plate were digitally obscured.

“The boot is only for storage,” the police said in a statement on their official microblog site at Weibo, China’s answer to Twitter.

“It is very dangerous for people to stay there. One can easily get hurt or killed in the case of a rear-end collision.”

Many messages posted below the picture blamed the man for his irresponsible behaviour.

“No one can save you if you like to risk your life like this,” one wrote.
