Motoring offenders in Chinese city made to stare into full beam headlights as punishment
Penalty meant to stop motorists needlessly driving on full beam and dazzling other road users

Motorists in Shenzhen in southern China who drive with their lights on full beam are to be punished by staring into powerful headlights for a minute, state media reported.
The city’s police announced the punishment on Tuesday, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
Offenders will be made to sit on a stool and stare into the blinding headlights for sixty seconds.
They will also be fined 300 yuan (HK$345) and made to recite regulations on when headlights can be put safely on full beam, the report said.
A police post on social media showed a photograph of a man sitting on a green chair looking into the bright lights of a truck, with two uniformed officers standing by.
The initiative has received generally positive feedback from internet users, with many well-liked comments saying the police have done a superb job punishing those who violate traffic rules.
“I feel like I’m seeing the light of God whenever my eyes are flashed by high beam lights of BMWs on traffic lanes,” one person wrote on Weibo.
Media in China have previously reported on several accidents in which people died after drivers were dazzled by bright, full beam headlights.
Police usually dock points on drivers’ licenses for breaching rules on the use of the lights, or fine motorists from 100 to several hundred yuan.
